Young Ballymun

Irish Foster Journal article by Julie Ann Lyons, Youngballymun Infant and Early Years Mental Health Specialist

Julie-Ann’s article on supporting infants as they transition into foster care, looks at the importance of care givers having some understanding of the child’s background, so that they can respond in a more sensitive way to the baby’s specific needs. Julie-Ann also talks about the importance of social workers being supported by their managers in order to best support the foster carers at this time. The concept of ‘minding the minders’ is one of the main messages from the article; like when parents are told on the plane to ‘put the oxygen mask on yourself before you put it on the child’.
